134- When critiquing country songs, those who are more seasoned writers often mention that there's a certain sound to a Nashville song, that the language needs to be conversational, etc. I've often heard - listen to what's playing on the radio. That's the sound you're going for. At the same time, the song needs to be fresh, original, a subject that hasn't already been written about. How does one create a cookie cutter song that's fresh?
133- What are some strategies you and Chris might use when you 'hit the wall' when songwriting and the ideas aren't flowing?
132- Is it common for country songs that deal with emotional subjects to take on a religious, Christian bent? If it is, do you think this is because that is the demographic of the songwriter(s) and the fan base? Do you think a song with sorrows and hopes can be as meaningful and impactful without the religious references? Thank you!
131- If you were to write a "how-to move to Nashville and get into the music scene" book, what would be your suggestions for housing, networking with songwriters and musicians, and finding a producer/studio to work with.
130- Will you be emailing a link for tomorrow's live stream?
129- Did you and Chris ever consider offering your songs for movies or tv? I was having a conversation with my partner the other day and we were remembering the movie “Still Alice” which dealt with Alzheimer’s and I thought this song could very well be part of a similar movie project.
128- Do you and Chris have a particular method of remembering your lyric/melody ideas?
127- Do you all do lead sheets with your songs or do you just take a demo to the publisher?
126- Where do you get your song ideas, and has there been an unusual source? I know some of mine have come from a tv commercial or a Hallmark movie, or even something so mundane as a road sign. Lol.
125- And to follow up on Keith’s last question, does Chris sometimes contribute to the lyrics as well as the melody?
124- Do you target a specific artist with your songs or does your publisher decide who to send them to? For instance, when you’re working on something do you say to yourself, “This would be a perfect match for Tim McGraw”? Etc.
123- For Jayne: Do you ever have a melody in your head that you’ll pass along to Chris with words or do you let him deal with the melody?
122- For Chris: Do you write with guitar or piano or ???
121- I'm feeling a bit blindsided by the abrupt end to our song. Did something happen that made you decide to tie it up and end it early? It was great to interact with you and Chris and build the song. I will miss the live stream, I'll be working. ?
120- Chris gets a really nice sound. Without getting too deep in the weeds, what workstation do you use and what instruments do you play?
119- Do you prefer writing about characters or situations? Like this song was about two people but a lot of songs just follow a situation or an occurrence with characters being secondary to the situation. Now I’ll let you rest and I’ll be quiet.
118- I noticed you ask lots of questions to help clarify a thought and/or feeling for the characters in the song. I found it very helpful. I remember Beth Nielsen Chapman using this technique as well and it also caught my attention. Is this a technique commonly used in songwriting or for story writers in general? Are there other similar techniques that really help to get to the heart of what one is trying to express when creating a song..?
117- Do you write strictly for the country genre or do you write for other genre’s? Which others do you do if you do others? Which do you find easier personally?
116- Does Chris ever make lyric changes to better fit the music structure or does he simply try to structure the music to fit the lyrics? Maybe he’ll just discuss a problem he’s having making it fit with you and you change the lyric? Sorry I’m eating up all the questions, but I co-write a lot and love to see how other people deal with it.
115- Do you start with a title and work from there or does it just depend?
114- This sort of follows up on Patricia’s question, but a bit more specific. Do you try to write something everyday, either together or separately?
113- Does Chris ever come to you with a musical idea and you start writing words or is it always words first?
112- When you collaborate with other songwriters/lyricists, are you generally in person or do you work via Zoom or the like? If the latter, how does that affect your process?
111- I don’t want to hog all the questions, so thanks Patricia! Do you or Chris always sing your submissions to your publisher or if you feel the song needs a country twang vocal or whatever do you get someone else to sing the demo?
110- How often do you work together in collaboration and do you each have your own projects you work on as well?
109- Do you guys find it harder to pitch a 3/4 or 6/8 song? You don’t hear a lot of those on country radio anymore.
